ショウブ科の概要
世界に1属2種が分布しており1,3)、北半球に広く分布する1)。
よく枝分かれした根茎のある多年草1)。
日本にも1属2種が分布している。
単子葉類の中で最も古い時代に分岐した分類群と考えられている4)。

分類
ショウブの仲間はショウブとセキショウの2種からなり、かつてはサトイモ科に分類されていた1)。
その後独立した科とされ、APGIVではショウブ属のみからなるショウブ目として、他のすべての単子葉類と姉妹群を形成するとされている4)。
